Speaker Setup & Care Guide

Please read this before your event, because a few simple habits prevent almost all the speaker damage we ever see — it’s a plain-English walkthrough of how to set up and run the PA you hire from us. If you’ve asked us to set the kit up for you, we’ll take care of all of this on your behalf.

Powering up in the right order

The single biggest cause of switch-on damage is connecting and powering gear in the wrong order. Follow these steps every time:

  • Connect everything with all equipment switched off — speakers, mixer and any sources such as DJ decks or instruments. Powering on while connecting risks audible thumps that can damage speakers.
  • Set all source output levels to minimum before powering anything on.
  • Power on in this order: sources first (DJ deck, instruments), then your mixer if you have one, then the speakers last. This protects the speakers from switch-on transients from gear further up the chain.
  • Power off in the reverse order: speakers first, then mixer, then sources.
  • With everything on and sources still at minimum, raise levels gradually — see gain staging below.

Connecting the Bose S1 Pro+

The Bose S1 Pro+ has three audio inputs, and matching the input to the source matters. Plugging a source into the wrong input either gives no usable signal or distorts heavily.

  • AUX input (1/4″ or 3.5mm) — this is the correct input for line-level sources such as DJ controllers, mixer outputs, phones and laptops. The supplied 10m TRS cable plugs in here at the speaker end; the other end goes to your source. Each end is colour-coded to help if you are setting up a stereo pair (left vs right).
  • Combo XLR/1/4″ inputs (Channels 1 and 2) — for microphones via XLR (such as an SM58) and instruments via 1/4″ TRS (such as a guitar). These are not for line-level signals.

A line-level source — a DJ controller, mixer output or phone — is too hot for the Combo inputs on Channels 1 and 2. Plugging one in there overdrives the speaker and risks damaging it. Always send line-level sources to the AUX input instead.

Connecting the JBL PRX912 (single speaker)

In single-speaker mode it’s supplied configured as a full-range speaker, handling the bass, mids and highs all from the one box. The supplied 10m TRS-to-XLR cable connects your source to the speaker. Plug the TRS end (1/4″ jack) into your source’s line out (mixer main out or DJ deck), and the XLR end into the speaker’s Channel 1 input. Each end is colour-coded for left/right if you are running a stereo pair.

Connecting the JBL pair (top + sub)

The pair package is the JBL PRX912 active 12″ top and the JBL PRX915XLF active 15″ sub. In this configuration the top is set up for the mids and highs and the sub takes the bass, so the two work together as a full-range system. There are two signal connections plus power:

  • Top to source: the supplied 10m TRS-to-XLR cable — TRS end into your source’s line out, XLR end into the top’s Channel 1 input.
  • Top to sub: the supplied 3m XLR link cable — male end into the top’s Mix Out, female end into the sub’s Channel 1 input.
  • Power: a 5m power cable for the top (long enough to reach the floor when it is pole-mounted on the sub) and a 2m power cable for the sub.

How speakers actually fail

Loudspeakers wear out slowly over many thousands of hours of sensible use — that is normal and it is our problem, not yours. What we are helping you avoid is a speaker broken in a single evening by too hot a signal, which is almost entirely avoidable. There are two mechanisms worth understanding:

  • Thermal failure. You feed the voice coil more power than it can dissipate as heat for long enough, and the coil overheats. The speaker goes quiet, distorted or silent — often unrecoverably.
  • Mechanical failure. The cone is driven beyond its physical limits, usually because the signal is clipped. You hear a rasp or rattle that doesn’t go away when you turn the level down.

Both come from the same root cause: too much signal, or too distorted a signal, reaching the driver. The rest of this guide is about how to prevent that.

The signal chain — where to look

In a typical rig the signal passes through several stages, each with a gain control and usually a meter or LED:

  • Source — microphone, laptop, DJ controller, phone or instrument. A hot source will pin everything downstream.
  • Mixer channel strip — the channel gain or trim at the top of the strip, and the channel fader.
  • Mixer master output — the main fader and the output meter; this is what is leaving the mixer.
  • Amp or active speaker input — an input sensitivity control and a signal/limit LED on the back panel.

The rule is that each stage should be set so it never goes into the red on its own meter. If you see a red LED anywhere in the chain, stop and turn down the stage upstream of it before the problem gets worse.

Set it once, then ride the master

Before the event, set your gain stages once, in sequence, so the signal stays clean from source to speaker. Then leave them alone and use the master fader for volume changes.

  • Upstream stages: set mic preamps and channel strips so each shows a healthy signal — peaks just touching the yellow zone, never the red.
  • Final mix stage: bring the mixer main out up so its meter peaks comfortably in green/yellow but never clips. This is the maximum undistorted signal your system will send to the speakers.
  • Speaker volume: with the mixer settled, turn the speaker’s own volume up until you reach your desired room volume — stop before it shows clipping or audible distortion.
  • From here on, turn the room down between songs with the mixer master fader, not the speaker knob, and never re-enter clipping at any point when bringing levels back up.

Don’t push a speaker past where it clips to get more loudness — that is how drivers die. If you genuinely need more output, the rig isn’t the right size for the event; ask us next time and we’ll suggest something better suited.

Don’t EQ around distortion

A common mistake is to reach for the EQ when something sounds bad. If a speaker sounds harsh and you cut the top end, the distortion is still there — you just can’t hear it as clearly, and the speaker is still being hammered. If you hear harshness, crackle or a rasp that rises and falls with the music, turn the level down first. If it clears up, you were overdriving something. If it doesn’t clear up even at moderate levels, something may already be damaged — please let us know. EQ is for tone shaping, not for masking a problem.

Volume vs perceived loudness

Turning a master fader up past the point the amp is happy rarely makes things much louder. The amp clips, the speaker compresses, and the extra effort produces distortion rather than volume. It feels counter-intuitive — the knob is going up and the sound isn’t. If the crowd needs more and you’re at the top of the rig’s comfortable range, the answer is a bigger rig, not more fader. Tell us what you’re trying to achieve when you book and we can specify accordingly.

Outdoor events

Outdoors eats power. With no walls to reflect sound back into the audience, anything you throw at the crowd is gone. It is very easy to bury a rig that would comfortably fill a pub and then reach for more fader, with the results above. If your event is outdoors, please tell us when you book so we can scale the rig appropriately — don’t try to make an indoor rig do an outdoor job by driving it harder.

For DJs and bands

  • Kick drum and bass synths are the usual cause of thermal failure. Sustained low-frequency energy is the hardest thing in music on a rig — if the kick is clipping the channel, turn the channel gain down rather than relying on the sub’s limiter.
  • Check your DJ controller’s master output before the event. Most controllers output hot. Set it so it sits in the green and let the system ride from there.
  • Wireless mic receivers can spike — a dropped mic or a hand over the capsule can deliver a short, very hot transient. Use a gate or compressor if we’ve supplied one, and watch the channel meter.
  • Feedback is information. A sudden rising whistle means a mic and a speaker are talking to each other. Pull the channel fader, move the mic, or ring out the room — don’t just cover the speaker.

Looking after the kit

If something doesn’t sound right, stop and turn it down — pushing a distorting speaker is what causes lasting damage. If you’d rather not manage levels on the night, we offer setup and breakdown as a paid extra; just ask when you book.

If you only remember one thing

Every red light is a warning. Every red light that stays on is damage in progress. Turn the stage upstream down. Don’t EQ round it, don’t push through it, and don’t assume the limiter will save you.
